A Christmas Story (1984)

Holiday, Film, For the Family

Why wait for the Christmas Day cable marathon when you can see it on the big screen? A box-office bomb when it debuted in 1983, it slowly morphed into a quirky and indespensable holiday classic. Based on the short story "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" by Jean Shepherd (who narrates the film), the plot revolves around young Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) and his laser focus on the only Christmas gift he wants: a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillion play his offbeat parents in a film filled with Ho! Ho! Ho!, a fra-gee-lee major award, highly imaginative cussing, a Little Orphan Annie decoder ring, essays, a tongue frozen to a flagpole, the neighbor's hounds and a grinning Chinese "chicken."
