One Day University: Hamilton vs. Jefferson

History/Science,Talks/Lectures,Education

Hamilton is experiencing a well-deserved revival. Often forced to take a back seat to other Founding Fathers, his vision of America as an economic powerhouse with a dynamic and aggressive government as its engine has found many followers. Hamilton helped get the Constitution ratified, helped found the Federalist Party, and served as the first Secretary of the Treasury. An orphan born in the West Indies, he was like a son to George Washington and perhaps should have been like a brother to Thomas Jefferson. But Jefferson fought bitterly against the Federalists and his election as president ushered in the “revolution of 1800.” Ironically, it would be Hamilton who helped assure Jefferson’s triumph over Aaron Burr. Jefferson articulated a different vision from Hamilton’s, promoting an agrarian democracy built upon geographic expansion—an “empire of liberty,” he called it. In 1793, he would resign as Secretary of State to protest Hamilton’s policies. In retirement, Jefferson would reflect on the differences between Federalists and Democratic-Republicans and express fear for the future of the new nation. Louis Masur is a Distinguished Professor of American Studies and History at Rutgers University.

Shakespeare on the Green & Green Expo: Hamlet

Play,Shakespeare,For the Family,Expo/Trade Show,Green/Environmental

People’s United Bank presents Shakespeare on the Green & Green Expo, a free family friendly outdoor performance by Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival and Expo with the Green Community. This haunting tragedy begs the devastating question: Where should a young man turn when his father is killed, his mother remarries, and the life he knew has been taken from him? At its heart, "Hamlet" is a play about young men and women struggling with loss, death, and the inescapable feeling that they don’t fit into the world around them. Offering audiences the opportunity to see themselves reflected in Shakespeare’s brooding language, this 90-minute production brings an intimacy and immediacy to Prince Hamlet’s iconic story of murder and madness.

The look of communication between the two is telling: although the Bacon Brothers have only been a working band since 1995, they too, run decades deep. Between Kevin's award-winning acting career and Michael's noted work as a film and television composer, the duo has released four studio releases and one live album, 'The No Food Jokes Tour.'
